Can farmers ‘sell’ the view or the wildlife value of their forests? It is widely recognised that trees on farms provide real economic, environmental, social and community values, without any products being harvested. This recognition has stimulated debate about the opportunities that might exist for farmers to make a profit from selling forest services.

Although international interest is currently focused on carbon credits, there are national moves to introduce programs that reward farmers for the contribution their forests make to the environment in other ways. For example, tourism, education and research opportunities may allow farmers to be paid for providing social services.

Entering into long-term leases and joint ventures with forestry investors provides an economic or business service in the same way as offering land for agricultural agistment.
